Scroll like normal. Learn test-prep words anyway.
rootscroll swaps harder words into the articles you already read, shows you the root inside each one, and brings every word back right before you'd forget it.
You keep reading. rootscroll does the studying part.
It upgrades words as you read.
Articles, posts, anything in Safari or Chrome. A few everyday words become the harder ones your test uses.
You tap the ones you don't know.
Its meaning, the roots inside it, and the words you already know that share them. The colour behind the word shows how well you know it.
It brings them back on time.
Two minutes a day in the app. Each word returns right before your brain would drop it.
Learn one root. Suddenly read eleven SAT words.
Most hard words are built from pieces you already use every day. Tap a word you know and watch what it unlocks. Then rate the root once, and every word that carries it shows it.
Your shows count as studying now.
Turn on captions on YouTube or Netflix. Every SAT word in what you're watching gets upgraded right in the captions and lands in your deck on its own.
Two minutes a day. That's the whole routine.
Every word you meet while scrolling piles into your deck. Reviews make you pull the word from memory before showing it, which is the part that makes it stick. Tap the card to flip it.
See what's sticking.
Every word you meet and rate adds up here: how many you know, what's due, your streak, and your Reading and Writing score every time you sit a test. Pick a point in the year to see it fill in.
Straight from the app. No mockups.
Every demo on this page runs rootscroll's own code and word data. These are screenshots of the product itself.
Built for the test you're actually taking.
The words that show up in SAT reading passages and vocabulary-in-context questions, from Easy to Hard.
The Hard tier of the same list, for GRE verbal. It's the SAT pool narrowed, not a separate list. Switch tests anytime and keep your progress.
Built on how memory actually works.
Spacing beats cramming.
In a flashcard study, spreading reviews out beat cramming for 90% of students.
Kornell, 2009Remembering beats rereading.
A week later, students who practiced recalling kept far more than students who reread.
Roediger & Karpicke, 2006Roots unlock whole families.
Teaching word roots improves vocabulary, most of all inside a word family.
Goodwin & Ahn, 2013We won't promise you a score.
Nobody can honestly promise a number. What rootscroll does is make the reading you already do count, and keep the words you learn from slipping away.

Quick answers.
How does the free week work?
You get everything for 7 days. Cancel before it ends and you pay nothing. After that it's $5 a month or $40 a year.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. On iPhone, rootscroll runs inside Safari on the pages you already read, and the app is where you review. On a laptop, it runs in Chrome. Your words follow you between them.
SAT or GRE?
Pick your test when you sign up. GRE uses the Hard tier of the list. Switch anytime and your progress comes with you.
Will it mess up what I'm reading?
No. Only a few words per page change, you can restore any word in one tap, and you can turn it off on any site.
What do the colours mean?
The brush stroke behind a word is how well you know it: brown is new, rust is don't know, gold is learning, sage is got it. The bold letters are its roots. Rate a root and it gets a line in every word that carries it.
Will it raise my score?
Nobody can honestly promise that. rootscroll helps you learn hard words and actually keep them, using study methods with decades of research behind them.
