Terms of Service

These Terms are an agreement between you and RootScroll LLC (“rootscroll,” “we,” “us”) covering our website at rootscroll.com, our browser extensions for Chrome and Safari, and our iPhone app (together, the “Service”). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy.

1. Who can use rootscroll

You must be at least 13 to use rootscroll. If you're under 18, you may use it only with the permission and involvement of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these Terms for you.

2. Your account

Give us accurate information, keep your login secure, and don't share your account. Each subscription is for one person. You're responsible for activity on your account.

3. Subscriptions and the free trial

• Plans. rootscroll is $5 per month or $40 per year, in U.S. dollars, plus any applicable taxes. The price you'll pay is shown before you confirm.
• Free trial. New subscribers get a 7-day free trial, one per person. You may be asked for a payment method to start it. If you don't cancel before the trial ends, your subscription starts automatically and you'll be charged for your plan. For subscriptions purchased on our website, we'll email you a reminder before your trial ends.
• Automatic renewal. Your subscription renews automatically each month or year at the then-current price until you cancel. If the price changes, we'll tell you in advance, and the new price applies at your next renewal.
• Canceling. If you subscribed on our website, cancel from your account settings or by emailing erick@rootscroll.com. If you subscribed through the App Store, cancel in your iPhone's Settings under your name, then Subscriptions. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period, and you keep access until then.
• Refunds. For website purchases, we don't give refunds for partial billing periods, except where the law requires it. If you think you were charged by mistake, email us within 30 days and we'll make it right. App Store purchases are refunded through Apple, under Apple's policies.

4. What rootscroll is, and isn't

rootscroll is an educational tool. It can help you learn and remember vocabulary, but we don't guarantee any test score, admissions result, or other outcome. We work hard to make our definitions and word roots accurate, and we'd appreciate it if you tell us when something looks wrong.

SAT is a trademark of the College Board, and GRE is a trademark of ETS. Neither is affiliated with or endorses rootscroll.

5. The extensions and other websites

rootscroll's extensions change how some words appear on pages you view, only on your own device. They don't change the websites themselves. We aren't responsible for the content of other websites, and rootscroll isn't affiliated with the sites where it runs. You can turn the extension off on any site.

6. Using rootscroll fairly

We give you a personal, non-transferable license to use rootscroll for your own learning. Please don't:

• copy, resell, or redistribute rootscroll or its content, including our word and root data;
• reverse engineer, scrape, or try to get around security or payment features;
• use rootscroll to break the law or to harm others;
• share your account or subscription with other people.

7. Our content, and your feedback

rootscroll, including its design, word lists, root explanations, and software, belongs to us and our licensors. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything.

8. Ending your use

You can stop using rootscroll at any time. We may suspend or end access for anyone who breaks these Terms. If we ever shut the Service down, we'll give reasonable notice and refund any unused portion of prepaid website subscriptions.

9. Disclaimers

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, and we don't promise the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.

10. Limit on liability

To the extent the law allows, rootscroll won't be liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, and our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or $50.

11. Apple

If you use our iPhone app, these Terms are between you and rootscroll, not Apple. Apple isn't responsible for the app or its content, has no obligation to provide support for it, and is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms with the right to enforce them. Your use of the app must also follow the App Store's terms.

12. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the District of Columbia, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Any dispute will be handled in the courts located in Washington, DC, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it elsewhere.

13. Changes to these Terms

If we update these Terms, we'll change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use rootscroll after that means you accept the updated Terms.
